Rajasthan fort tour route: Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur and Jaisalmer itinerary
A practical Rajasthan fort tour route from Jaipur to Jodhpur, Udaipur and Jaisalmer, with train, bus and car options for every leg of the circuit.
Rajasthan's forts are spread across a state roughly the size of a small country, so the route you pick matters as much as the list of forts on it. Here's a practical circuit, plus a shorter version if you're tighter on time.
The full circuit: Jaipur → Jodhpur → Udaipur → Jaisalmer
This is the route that covers the most UNESCO-listed hill forts in one trip, roughly in this order: Jaipur (Amer Fort), an optional stop at Ajmer/Pushkar, Jodhpur (Mehrangarh Fort), Kumbhalgarh, Udaipur, Chittorgarh, and Jaisalmer. Doing it justice comfortably takes 8–10 days if you want a day at each major stop rather than a rushed pass-through.
The shorter version: Jaipur → Jodhpur → Udaipur
If Jaisalmer's distance is the sticking point, dropping it gives you a tighter, still very complete circuit covering Amer Fort, Mehrangarh Fort, and Udaipur's palace-and-lake city (with Kumbhalgarh and Chittorgarh as day trips from Udaipur). This version is realistic in 5–6 days.
Leg-by-leg transport options
- Delhi to Jaipur — train, bus or flight; the fastest trains cover it in well under 5 hours, making this the easiest entry point into the circuit.
- Jaipur to Jodhpur — a direct train or an overnight bus; the train is generally the more comfortable choice for this stretch.
- Jodhpur to Udaipur — mostly a bus or car journey, since direct train options are limited; the road route passes close to Kumbhalgarh, which is worth timing your travel around.
- Udaipur to Chittorgarh — an easy train or car day trip, doable as a there-and-back from Udaipur without changing hotels.
- Udaipur to Jaisalmer — the longest leg by far; a direct train or a flight connection through Jodhpur is usually more realistic than driving straight through.
- Jaisalmer back to Delhi — flight or train, depending on how much time is left in your trip.
Pro tip: Rather than locking into one mode for the whole circuit, mix train for the longer legs and car or bus for the shorter, scenery-heavy stretches like Jodhpur–Udaipur — it's usually both cheaper and more comfortable than an all-road or all-rail trip.
Booking the train legs
Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur are all well-connected, high-demand routes, especially in the October–March travel season — book as early in the 60-day advance reservation window as you can. If a leg still shows up waitlisted close to your date, check our guide on what a WL number actually means for a Rajasthan trip before assuming you need to rebook everything.
