Best fort trips in India by train: routes, stations and how to plan them
Which station gets you closest to which fort? A practical guide to reaching India's major forts by train, from Agra and Jaipur to Gwalior and Golconda.
Most of India's best-known forts sit close enough to a well-connected railway station that a train-based trip is genuinely practical — you just need to know which station to book to, and what's left to sort out once you arrive.
Fort by fort: nearest useful station
- Agra Fort → Agra Cantt or Agra Fort station — an easy Delhi–Agra day trip on any of the fast morning trains.
- Amer Fort → Jaipur Junction — from there it's a local bus, taxi, or auto for the last stretch out to the fort.
- Mehrangarh Fort → Jodhpur Junction — the fort towers over the city, an easy taxi or auto ride from the station.
- Chittorgarh Fort → Chittorgarh station — a compact station-to-fort trip, easily doable as a day stop.
- Gwalior Fort → Gwalior station — well connected to Delhi by several daily trains, comfortable as an overnight trip.
- Golconda Fort → Hyderabad's Secunderabad or Hyderabad Deccan stations — from there, metro plus a short taxi ride covers the rest.
- Sinhagad Fort → Pune Junction — the station gets you into the city; the fort itself needs a road transfer (and some walking or a jeep) from there.
Train + last-mile transport is the norm, not the exception
Almost none of these forts sit directly next to a station — the realistic plan for every one of them is a train (or flight) into the nearest city, then a local bus, taxi, auto, or short trek for the final stretch. Budget that last leg into your day rather than assuming the fort is walkable from the platform.
Pro tip: For the Rajasthan forts especially, book your train leg as early in the advance reservation window as you reasonably can — Jaipur, Jodhpur and Agra are all high-demand corridors, particularly October through March.
If your train to a fort city is waitlisted
A waitlisted ticket to Jaipur, Jodhpur, or Agra doesn't have to derail a fort trip — see our guide on reading a WL number and our fully-booked-train guide for the same fallback options (alternate trains, Vikalp, nearby stations, or a mixed-mode connection) that apply to any Indian rail journey.
