Train waitlisted for your fort trip? Alternative routes that still work
A waitlisted train doesn't have to cancel your Rajasthan or Agra fort trip. Here are the practical alternative routes and backups worth checking first.
A fort trip planned around a fixed date is exactly the kind of journey where a waitlisted train stings the most — you can't easily shift the whole itinerary, but you also don't want to overpay in a panic. Here's the order worth checking things in.
1. Start with the same route, different options
- Check a different class on the same train — Sleeper or 3AC availability doesn't always run out at the same time.
- Check other trains on the same date to the same city — Jaipur, Jodhpur and Agra are all served by more than one useful train.
- Opt into the Vikalp scheme on your existing waitlisted ticket so the system can auto-shift you to a vacant seat on an alternate train at chart time.
2. Widen the search a little
- Try a nearby departure or arrival station — a slightly different boarding point can put you on an entirely different, less crowded quota.
- Consider a connecting route — train to a nearby hub plus a shorter bus or train leg on to your fort-city destination.
- For longer routes like Delhi–Jaisalmer, check whether a flight into Jodhpur plus a shorter onward train or car leg beats waiting on a long-haul waitlist.
3. Keep a genuine backup, not a last-minute scramble
An overnight AC sleeper bus is a realistic backup on most Delhi–Rajasthan and Agra routes, and often has more last-minute availability than trains during the busiest season. If your date is fixed and non-negotiable, book the backup a few days ahead rather than waiting for the final chart to confirm one way or the other.
Pro tip: This is exactly the situation our general "what to do when your train is fully booked" guide is written for — the same fallback options apply whether you're headed to a fort circuit or anywhere else on the network.
