Route GuideDelhi's own forts are worth an afternoon on their own, but the real appeal for a weekend trip is what's within a few hours' reach — a genuinely wide spread of fort styles without needing to fly anywhere.
In the city itself
- Red Fort — the Mughal seat of power in Old Delhi, worth two to three hours including the museum galleries inside.
- Purana Qila — quieter and less crowded than the Red Fort, near the zoo and Humayun's Tomb if you want to combine stops.
A half-day out
- Neemrana Fort, Rajasthan — now partly a heritage hotel, a popular half-day or overnight escape from Delhi.
A full day or overnight trip
- Agra Fort — usually paired with the Taj Mahal on a Delhi–Agra day trip, well served by fast trains.
- Alwar and Bala Qila, Rajasthan — a less-visited hill fort with good views, further off the main tourist trail.
- Deeg Fort and Palace, Rajasthan — known more for its palace and water gardens than for military architecture.
A proper weekend trip
- Gwalior Fort, Madhya Pradesh — a hilltop fort well connected to Delhi by train, comfortably doable as an overnight trip.
Pro tip: Delhi–Agra and Delhi–Jaipur are both fast, high-frequency train corridors, which makes those two the easiest forts to bolt onto a weekend without much planning. Neemrana and Alwar work better with a car, since train connections are thinner.
