UTS app: how to book unreserved and platform tickets from your phone
Skip the ticket-counter queue: the UTS app lets you book unreserved (general class), season, and platform tickets on Indian Railways straight from your smartphone.
If your journey doesn't need a reserved berth — a short unreserved (general/second class) hop, a platform ticket, or a season pass — you don't need to queue at a counter at all. UTS, Indian Railways' official Unreserved Ticketing System app, handles all three from your phone.
What you can — and can't — book on UTS
- Unreserved (general/second class) point-to-point journey tickets.
- Season tickets (monthly and longer passes for regular commuters).
- Platform tickets, if you're within the app's set radius of the station.
- Not available: Sleeper, AC, or any other reserved-berth class — UTS is strictly for unreserved travel.
Paper vs. paperless mode
In paperless mode, the app checks your location via GPS to confirm you're near the station or track before letting you book, and your journey needs to start within a set window after booking (the app shows a live countdown, so rely on that rather than a fixed number) — after which you'll need to travel or rebook. In paper mode, you still need to print the ticket at an ATVM or counter kiosk before boarding.
- Register with your mobile number, name, gender and date of birth; you'll receive an OTP/MPIN to complete setup.
- Once a paperless ticket is booked, you can show it to the TTE straight from the app, even without an internet connection at that moment.
- Paperless tickets generally can't be cancelled once booked, so double-check your journey details before confirming.
Pro tip: For a platform ticket when you're just seeing someone off (not travelling yourself), UTS is usually the fastest option — no counter queue, and it's valid the moment it's issued.
