Senior citizen train travel in India: concession status and lower berth priority (2026)
Senior citizen railway concession status in 2026, plus how the lower berth senior citizen quota actually works when booking a reserved sleeper or AC ticket.
Train travel has long been the most practical way for senior citizens in India to get around — affordable, comfortable, and (before 2020) discounted. Here's exactly where things stand in 2026.
The fare concession: still suspended
Before March 2020, men aged 60 and above got a 40% fare discount, and women aged 58 and above got 50% off, on most reserved classes. That concession was suspended during the pandemic and, as of 2026, has not been reinstated — the Railway Ministry has cited the financial cost as the reason in Parliament, even as budget discussions about restoring it continue to come up periodically. Because this is an actively discussed policy, it's worth checking irctc.co.in for the latest before you assume either way.
Pro tip: The concession never applied to Tatkal, Premium Tatkal, or Suvidha tickets even before 2020 — that hasn't changed either.
What's still available
- Automatic lower-berth priority for senior citizens booking a reserved sleeper or AC class ticket — no separate request needed if age is entered correctly under the Senior Citizen (SR) quota option.
- Station-level assistance, including wheelchair and porter support at major stations.
- Separate concessions for other categories (Divyangjan/persons with disabilities, patients with specific medical conditions, and students) that are unrelated to the general senior citizen concession and have their own eligibility rules.
How the lower berth senior citizen quota actually works
A small number of lower berths are earmarked per coach for senior citizens (and separately for pregnant women and passengers with disabilities). If you enter your age correctly while booking, the system tries to auto-allot one of these automatically — it isn't guaranteed on every train, since the earmarked pool is limited, but it's the default behaviour rather than something you need to specifically request.
Booking tips
Make sure the age entered while booking exactly matches the ID you'll be carrying — a mismatch can cause problems during ticket checking, even without a fare discount involved. If a lower berth isn't auto-allotted, it can usually still be requested during booking or checked afterward through your PNR.
