Route Guide

The Mumbai–Kochi run along the Konkan Railway passes through some of the most dramatic coastal and Western Ghats scenery in the country. It's a long journey — realistically somewhere between 18 and 24 hours depending on the specific train — so planning it well makes a real difference to how much you enjoy it.

Which trains to look for

The Netravati Express runs daily between Mumbai (Lokmanya Tilak Terminus) and Kerala, passing through Kochi, and was the first scheduled service to run the full length of the Konkan Railway. The LTT–Ernakulam Duronto Express is a non-stop, bi-weekly alternative and is generally considered the second-fastest option for this route — worth checking if your travel dates line up with its limited weekly schedule, since fewer halts doesn't always translate to a dramatically shorter journey once you compare actual timetables.

Pick a daylight window

Try to time the Ratnagiri–Goa–Karwar stretch for daylight hours — it's the most scenic section by a wide margin, running close to the coast with the Western Ghats rising on the other side. Since this is such a long journey, you won't get all of it in daylight regardless of which train you pick, so decide which stretch matters most to you and check that specific train's timetable against it.

  • Window seats on the left side (heading south) generally face the coast.
  • Sleeper and 3AC are available on most trains on this route, so you don't need to book AC First to get a berth.
  • Carry snacks and water for a long stretch of the journey — pantry service and stop-vendors vary by train.

Pro tip: Monsoon speed restrictions are common on the Konkan route — trains that normally run at higher speeds can be slowed to 40–75 km/h during heavy rain, adding real time to the journey. If you're travelling June–September, build in extra buffer before any onward connection.
