Buses don't get the credit they deserve. On plenty of routes — especially where trains are scarce, badly timed, or fully waitlisted — an overnight Volvo or sleeper coach beats waiting on a waitlist.

When a bus genuinely wins

  • Routes under about 500–600km where an overnight bus lets you sleep through the trip and skip a hotel night, similar to a train but often with more last-minute seat availability.
  • Routes where trains are thin, badly timed, or run only a few days a week, while buses run multiple times daily.
  • When your train option is deep in the waitlist and departure is close — a confirmed bus seat beats gambling on a WL ticket.

What to actually look for

  • AC sleeper for anything over 6 hours overnight — a seater gets uncomfortable fast on longer hauls.
  • Boarding point close to a real landmark, not a vague street name.
  • Operator reviews from the last few weeks, not just the overall rating — bus quality on a given route can shift quickly between operators.
  • Multi-axle or Volvo-class coaches for hill or ghat routes, where a smoother ride matters more than on flat highway stretches.

Pro tip: Front-row upper berths near the driver tend to be the smoothest ride on hill routes, since they're closer to the axle and feel less of the sway further back.
